Tunnel books are made up of a series of pages whose overall effect is to create the illusion of depth and perspective. Tunnel books are “read” through a cutaway in the cover, revealing each page through the opening, which allows the reader to see through the entire book to the back inside cover. The images on each page work together to form a three-dimensional scene that helps tell the story. Tunnel books were inspired by theater stage sets. In this workshop, participants will use greeting cards, postcards, and photos they bring, in additional to provided materials (papers, magazines, and other ephemera), to create a memory book. PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS MUST BRING THEIR OWN PHOTOS, GREETING CARD OR POSTCARDS TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT.

A discussion of the religious roots that gave rise to the Greek myths and some of the less well-known sides of the "Olympian" deities. We’ll discuss how the Greeks used their myths to describe themselves and others, and what religion looked like as practiced by them. How did these seemingly familiar gods fit into the ancient Greek and Mediterranean cultures? What did early anthropologists make of them? Of special interest will be the controversial Jane Ellen Harrison and the so-called Cambridge Ritualist School; she was one of the earliest and most influential proponents of applying insights from modern anthropology to ancient Greek religion.

Although mostly unheralded, Alice Neel was one of the great American painters of the Twentieth Century, and a pioneer among women artists. A painter of people, landscape, and still life, Neel was never fashionable or in step with avant-garde movements. When abstract expressionism and pop art were all the rage, she painted in a style and with an approach distinctively her own. Come and hear about her unconventional life and her remarkable career, and see many examples of her unique and sometimes shocking paintings.
