For the past fifty years, the memory of Newark’s 1967 race “riot” has dominated perceptions of the city. This class aims to disrupt that tendency by placing those five days in a deeper history of American race and violence, to explore the generation and function of popular narratives of the “riot,” and to suggest new avenues for exploring the city’s history. At a time when many are claiming Newark’s renaissance and we see racial violence in the nation’s streets once again, what does 1967 have to tell us about how we might navigate these new – but familiar – waters?
